Here below a general map of Rome including all the best locations for a good accommodation. As it is possible to see historically many of the most inetersting districts follow the river Tevere:
Prati - Castel S. Angelo and San Pietro: the Vatican districts
Who wishes to visit Saint Peter Church, Vatican Museums or Castel S. Angelo should take into serious consideration the chance to rent an apartment in these districts. Both Prati or Vaticano San Pietro (which on the otherside of Saint Peter Square is called Portacavalleggeri district) are the ideal locations in Rome if you intend to quickly walk to Saint Peter square, Vatican Museums and Castel S. Angelo. Such locations represent indeed a great and strategic starting point to spend a few days in the city. Moreover Prati-Vatican district allows the visitor to be in contact with real roman life more than other central locations as Campo de Fiori or Trastevere (for instance) since it is usually possible to meet more roman people. Shops - via Cola di Rienzo in Prati is indeed one of the main central shopping areas of Rome - restaurants, night life is less tourist than other places and makes this kind of location also a little bit more affordable than Navona for renting an holiday apartment. Notwithstanding this Prati and Vaticano are real centre as well and at walking distance from Flaminio or Corso vittorio Emanuele which are reachable by simply crossing the river Tevere. One interesting walk could start from Castel. S. Angelo and continue along Ponte dell 'Angelo crossing the river Tevere. On the other side walking through via dei Banchi Nuovi and del Governo Vecchio up to Navona square. During this 10 minutes walk it is really easy to stop looking at the most famous antique shops of Rome or at one of the small atelier of via del Governo Vecchio. Aurelio: a nice semi-central district near Vatican City This is a more residential semi-central district very well connected to the centre (10 minutes by Line A - Stops Cornelia or Baldo degli Ubaldi) where it is possible to find out a less expensive apartment or hotel room than the accommodations available in the centre (usually -20-30% respect to the main centre). Aurelio is indeed a modern location of Rome just on the top of Vatican city and Prati districts. This district offers also a good variety of shops (in via Baldo degli Ubaldi and via Boccea) or restaurants cheaper than the ones of the city centre. We really suggest this location for young people, couples and families who like to walk and see also the real roman life outside of the main historic centre.
Navona - Campo de Fiori : the heart of Rome
This area represents one of the best locations for night life in Rome centre. Beside the beauty and the charm of its unique architecture (Navona, area, Pantheon, Campo de Fiori) the best bars, pubs or clubs of Rome city centre are located among the river Tevere and via del Corso-Piazza Venezia.
Navona area and Campo de Fiori are indeed the two of the main squares located in between Roman Forum and the river Tevere. Here it is possible to find restaurants as Trattoria dar Pallaro or Taverna Lucifero and clubs as La Maison or La Cabala among the most trendy in Rome. One of the nicest walks of Rome city centre can start or terminate in this area . In our opinion Piazza Navona and Campo de Fiori holiday apartments can be perfect for young people seeking to be in the heart of night life at any price. At the same time such areas can grant one of the most romantic holidays to couples visiting the city for the first time. Spanish Steps : Fashion and Charm This location of Rome does not need any presentation. It is the best option for people wishing to be in the heart of Rome in between the best shops (via Frattina with Bulgari, Armani, Gucci,…) and the history of Rome represented by its monuments and its central alleys . On the top of the square there is also Villa Borghese Park which hosts the second most visited museum of Rome Galleria Borghese ( see museums in Rome – what to see in rome in a few days ). Of course such a charm makes apartments really expensive here and visitors should be very careful with agencies offering cheap accommodations in this location. Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline Hill
This district represents the central hub of Rome historic city centre and is located in between Roman Forum and Colosseum, Termini Central Station, via del Corso, Capitoline hill and Circo Massimo , Corso Vittorio Emanuele which leads to Navona area and Vatican City. Everything is really at 5-10 minutes of distance from Piazza Venezia and makes this area one of the most strategic and practical where to rent an apartment in Rome centre. As negative aspects people should consider of this location: some lacks of quietness and romanticism.
Trastevere: Art, good food and Traditions
Trastevere was a working-class neighbourhood of Rome in the past and has become in the time place of traditions, arts and typical roman food ( see Restaurants in Rome Trastevere in the relevant section ). The charm of this location of Rome can be barely described and corresponds to the rates of accommodations and holiday apartments available in the whole district. The alleys are full of shops, restaurants often with tables outside in the street, bars and stalls with every genre of products. The main square (Santa Maria in Trastevere) is usually full of street - artists and hosts one of the most beautiful churches of Rome we really suggest to visit: Santa Maria in Trastevere. Testaccio: Clubs, Bars and popular Restaurants
Also Testaccio was a working-class neighbourhood in the past of Rome and , diversely from Trastvere, it still preserves its folk atmosphere and old traditions as one of the most known markets of Rome in Piazza Testaccio Monday-Saturday from 7.30 am to 02.00 pm. By the way this is also the district of roman night clubs (Gioia, Akab, Radio Londra, El Charro,..) which expecially during the wek-end become the most crowded area of Rome after midnight. There is also a wide choice of Testaccio typical roman restaurants ,and pubs from Via Galvani. The access to the city centre is very easy as Testaccio district is actually located between river Tevere (Trastevere is on the opposite side of the river at only 20 minutes walk), Piazza Venezia (5-10 minutes by bus) and San Giovanni Colosseum. Finally within this area of Rome near the clubs streets it is located even the famous MACRO musem (Contemprary art) recently completed and now open to the public - Via Reggio Emilia 54, 00198 Roma. San Giovanni – Colosseum – Roman ForumThis district located in the south east side of Rome is very attractive since here you can find among other things Colosseum, Roman Forum and Basilica di San Giovanni. We warmly recommend to visit at least all these 3 sites of the ancient – first two - and religious – the third – Rome. San Giovanni Colosseum location is also very well served by different bus lines or underground connecting the rest of the city. However from 2009 and probably till 2014 public works for the new metro line C are creating a lot of problems here with traffic jams and delays on the public transports. For this reason, expecially if you intend to reach Rome by car, we would suggest to look for an holiday apartment in a district less blocked. Termini and San LorenzoBoth these Termini and San Lorenzo locations in rome offer the chance to find an holiday apartment at walking distance from Rome Termini railway central station and Metro Line A or B. For this reason to choose an accommodation here in Rome means to get the best in terms of access and connectivity. San Lorenzo which is located just behind Termini station and next to the first University of Rome “La Sapienza” is a very lively and multicoloured district. It is a place full of low cost popular restaurants bars or pubs among young students. Additionally there are also small art galleries, theatres and cinemas often linked to activities of the University. On the other side of Termini respect to San Lorenzo area, between via Principe Amedeo and viale Manzoni (Termini Esquilino district), it is possible to rent and sleep in the cheapest accommodations and hotels of Rome centre. However the quality is often comparable to the price. For this reason we usually double check our holiday apartments here in order to offer the highest quality available and grant the same level we have in the other areas of the city ( See for instance our beautiful Manzoni Holiday apartment )
Popolo - Flaminio Piazza del Popolo is one of the most beautiful squares of Rome between the Romantic hill of Pincio - Villa Borghese and the river Tevere direction Prati district - via Cola di Rienzo. Starting from the square, via del Corso - "the shopping street of Rome centre" together with the more expensive via Frattina and via Condotti - leads to Piazza Venezia on the opposite side through a 20 minutes walk among the shops. By renting an holiday apartment in Rome Flaminio neighbourhood just outside of Piazza del Popolo it is possible to get access to both the main centre (via del Corso, Spanish Steps, Fontana de Trevi, Piazza Venezia) and Prati-Vatican district (Vatican city , Castel S. Angelo, Saint Peter Square). More in detail people living in Flaminio district can cover in no more than 20 minutes either the centre towards Roman Forum and Piazza Venezia or Prati Vatican - District. Metro stop is indeed Flaminio and public transport is of course frequent and fast from here if needed.
