What to see in Piazza Venezia
Piazza Venezia is a place that can not be missed from everyone visiting Rome for its strategic and central position. However it may actually happen that this wonderful square of Rome is considered as a transit point more than a great historical and artistic site. For this reason we suggest a possible path in Piazza Venezia to highlight what to see and what absolutley "deserve" a stop here.
Let's start our possible tour from the centre of Piazza Venezia in Rome, today also hub of many buses that run through the center of the city. The square as it is was built in 1870, what we still have about the original Renaissance is Palazzo Venezia, built in the fifteenth century, now a library of art and a very well known place for many exhibitions.in Rome. As the majority of people already know Mussolini's speeches took place from the balcony of Palazzo Venezia during the period of fascism.
On the other side of the square (on the left respect to Palazzo Venezia's picture above) the impressive Vittorio Emanuele's Monument - Altare della Patria- which is open to the public and can be visited free of charge. The Altare della Patria was built in 1884 and is also called the typewriter for its shape.

Going head with our tour of Rome on the right looking at the the Altare there is the Capitoline Hill. Nowadays nothing remains of the ancient Capitoline temple of Jupiter, whose loss has been called one of the most serious deficiencies of Roman architecture. Today, a staircase designed by Michelangelo in 1530 goes up to the complex of the Capitol. Goethe called the Capitol an enchanted palace in the desert and it actually stillò appears as a quiet and magic place if compared to the traffic of Piazza Venezia. At the centre of Piazza del Campidoglio there is the statue of Marcus Aurelius. The square is finally surrounded by the roman senatorial palace, the Capitoline Museum of Rome (Palazzo dei Conservatori on the left) and the Pinacoteca.
The museum today contains hundreds of works of art as the famous dying gladiator. The Capitoline Hill hosts also the church of S. Maria in Aracoeli which is a medieval church behind the Capitoline Museum accessible from its monumental stairway of 124 steps. It was built exactly where Augusto was warned of the coming of Christ in Rome, through the words - est haec ara filii Dei . Also for this reason it is called the Altar of Heaven with its Romanesque style The stairs were added in 1348.

Vittorio Emanuele Monument in Piazza Venezia
The
Vittorio Emanuele Monument or “Vittoriano”, was erected at the turn of the nineteenth century as the “Altar of the Nation” to commemorate Italian Unification. It was compared in the past to a typewriter and than by Americans to a wedding cake it actually has assumed an high significance for Italians. You can not agree with the style chosen in the same area of Romans Forums, but it’s great to clamber up and down the sweeping terraces that before could be seen only from the street. There are also things to see inside, better if during a rainy day, as the vast Museum of Risorgimento
A collection of military flags and a bookshop. Anyway the best to see here surely is outside with the enormous equestrian statue of Vittorio Emanuele II and Piazza del Campidoglio behind. We really suggest to take a look at
Vittoriano Museum on the left side of the building where are usually hosted beautiful and interesting art exhibitions. The Capitoline Hill
It is the first and the most important hill of Rome (unfortunately hided on one side by the huge Vittorio Emanuele Monument) and now the seat of the Major of Rome. The name comes from its strategic position in the Imperial Rome as Caput Mundi Head of the World. It seems unbelievable but all these words, Capital, capitol, Money derive from here for different reasons linked to the influence and importance of this place in the past. Money, for instance, comes from the temple dedicated to Juno Moneta that once stood nearby. We recommend to visit Capitoline Museums and the Church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli.
